EL PUERTO - PICO EL CORNÓN ROUTE

El Puerto - Pico El Cornón route

Route type: Circular

Distance: 17.5 km

Duration: 6h 30min

Elevation gain: 1,000 m

Activity: Ski touring

Difficulty: Medium

The views from El Cornón are spectacular and take in the geography of Narcea, Babia, Somiedo and Ubiñas, and even further on clear days. The route has no great difficulty or exposure for most of its length. However, bear in mind how long it is and the slight exposure on the last steep stretch before the summit.

The route starts in Santa María del Puerto, Somiedo. Cross the village along its south-western edge to find a track which forks about 300 m after leaving the village; take the southern, downhill option, which leads across the Puerto river.

Continue along the left bank to the Prefustes stream, which you also follow through the Vega Cimera to the Collado Tres Cruces. You reach the Alto de Prefustes and make a first descent heading west-north-west to the La Almozarra plateau. Crossing the plateau lets you move quickly to the final climb to the summit.

The climb to the summit allows different options, both up and down. The reference is Pico Aspia, always kept on your left during the ascent, which forms a col with El Cornón where you can make a very comfortable stop before tackling the last stretch. To reach the summit, look for the east spur.

The descent allows different variants. We have chosen the one that crosses to the south of Peña Blanca and Peña Penouta, which, with a sustained and easy descent, lead back to El Puerto along the northern side of the valley.
