Pola de Somiedo

Pola de Somiedo is the main village of the concejo and the gateway to Somiedo Natural Park. It is the only settlement with enough services to use as a base: the park's visitor centre is here, along with most of the accommodation and the trailheads of several waymarked routes.

If this is your first time in Somiedo and you would rather not drive for everything, stay here. If you want to sleep next to the glacial lakes, look at Valle del Lago; if you are coming to walk the western valleys, Villar de Vildas leaves you closer.

Worth making your first stop: it explains the natural processes of the park and its ethnographic heritage, and helps you get your bearings before heading out.

Fundación Oso Pardo

The brown bear foundation runs its centre in Pola de Somiedo and organises guided bear-watching outings. Somiedo is one of the best places in the Cantabrian Mountains to see brown bears in the wild, and going out with someone who knows the crossings changes the odds considerably. The viewpoints and the best seasons are in bear watching in Somiedo.

Mercao de Nueite

In mid-August the village holds this night market with local crafts, honey, cheeses and cured meats. It is the busiest event of the summer in the concejo.

Trails starting in Pola de Somiedo

These are the waymarked routes whose trailhead is in the village or a few minutes away by car:

The Senda Accesible starts in the village itself, crossing a wooden bridge over the river Sousas, and is the only wheelchair-accessible trail in the park. See all the routes.

Where to eat in Pola de Somiedo

Pola has more places to eat than any other village in the concejo: Restaurante Casa Miño, Sidrería Parrilla Carión, El Meirel and Casa Pepe El Molín. The specialities of each and the number to book are in where to eat in Somiedo.

Camping in Pola de Somiedo

Camping La Pomarada de Somiedo is the village campsite and the only option in the concejo if you are travelling with a tent, caravan or campervan. It opens from March to November, so it is not an option in deep winter.

Pitches run from 50 to 70 m², with a dedicated campervan area and:

  • Restaurant and café
  • 9A electricity, drinking water and drainage on the pitch
  • Hot showers and a paid laundry
  • Free WiFi and a shop in high season
  • Playground and river access

There is no pool on site, but the heated municipal pool is 200 m away, along with an EV charging point. The health centre is 50 m from the gate.

Book ahead in July and August, when most of the year's visitors arrive. Rates and exact season dates are on their website.

How to get here

Access is via the AS-227, which climbs the river Somiedo valley from Aguasmestas, beyond Belmonte de Miranda. The full route from Oviedo, León and Madrid is in how to get to Somiedo. Local roads run from the village to Valle del Lago, Saliencia and La Peral. You can download the park map as a PDF.
